Qu Yuan lived during the Warring States period in China and was deeply patriotic. The local people admired him and tried to save him by paddling their boats and throwing rice dumplings into the water to prevent the fish from eating his body.

The boats can be up to 30 meters long and are manned by a team of rowers. The races are held on rivers, lakes, or any other large bodies of water.
