Qian Zhongshu (1910-1998) was a renowned Chinese writer, scholar, and translator. He is best known for his novel "Fortress Besieged" and his groundbreaking literary criticism.

Born in Wuxi, China, Qian showed exceptional intellectual ability from a young age. He studied at Tsinghua University in Beijing and later pursued further studies in Europe, including at Oxford University. Qian's experiences abroad greatly influenced his writing and overall worldview.

"Fortress Besieged," published in 1947, is widely regarded as one of the most important works of modern Chinese literature. Set in 1930s China, the novel humorously depicts the struggles of Fang Hongjian, a young intellectual who finds himself entangled in a web of complicated relationships and societal expectations. In addition to his own creations, Qian made significant contributions as a translator. He translated numerous works of Western literature into Chinese, including Shakespeare's plays, Gibbon's "The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire," and Joyce's "Ulysses." His translations were widely acclaimed for their faithfulness to the original texts and their literary excellence.
