Puyi's English Introduction

Puyi (1906-1967) was the last Emperor of China and the twelfth and final ruler of the Qing Dynasty. Born on February 7, 1906 in Beijing, he ascended to the throne at the tender age of two in 1908, following the sudden death of his father, Emperor Guangxu. Puyi's reign, however, was short-lived as it was cut short by the 1911 Xinhai Revolution, which led to the end of the imperial era in China.

After the revolution, Puyi was forced to abdicate the throne in 1912. He was later allowed to continue residing in the Forbidden City as a "commoner emperor," until 1924 when he was expelled by warlord Feng Yuxiang. Puyi then lived in Tianjin and Manchuria under Japanese protection, and was eventually installed as the puppet emperor of Manchukuo, a Japanese-controlled state, in 1934.

Following World War II, Puyi was captured by Soviet troops and held as a prisoner for five years. In 1950, he was handed over to the Chinese Communist Party and faced charges for his collaboration with the Japanese. However, he was later declared reformed and was released in 1959.

After his release, Puyi was enlisted as a gardener at the Beijing Botanical Garden. He spent the remaining years of his life writing his memoir, "From Emperor to Citizen," which was later adapted into a film. Puyi passed away on October 17, 1967, at the age of 61.

Puyi's complex life, marked by political upheaval and personal struggles, provides a unique insight into China's turbulent transition from an imperial dynasty to a republic. Despite his controversial role, Puyi remains a figure of historical significance, representing the end of an era in Chinese history.
